All we originally knew about this photograph was this - "Great Dog Show at the Crystal Palace. Dogs from all parts of the United Kingdom are arriving at the Crystal Palace Kennel Show which opened to-day. The picture shows Afghan Hound " Nakanda of Ghazni" exhibited by Mrs. Robson. " Well the "fun" of this job (breed research) is you never know where a piece of ephemera can lead you to, or what you may discover in rersearching just a simple photograph.

Today's modern purebred breed of Afghan Hound descends from dogs brought in the 1920s to Great Britain, and are a blending of types and varieties of long haired sighthounds from across Afghanistan and the surrounding areas.

The coat may be any colour, but white markings, particularly on the head, are discouraged; many individuals have a black facial mask. Some specimens have facial hair that looks like a Fu Manchu moustache that are called "mandarins. " Some Afghan Hounds are almost white, but particolour hounds (white with islands of red or black) are not acceptable and may indicate impure breeding.
