Airedale Terrier Health Problems and Raising an Airedale Terrier Puppy to be Healthy

The most common health problems in Airedales:

The Airedale Club of America conducted a health survey that included 519 Airedales. About HALF were reported with skin conditions, including allergies, pyoderma, seborrhea, follicular dysplasia, and lick granuloma. About 40% were reported with non-tumorous growths (sebaceous cysts, papillomas, lipomas). So skin is a central area of potential health problems in Airedales.

More ominously, 26% of the Airedales in the club survey were reported with malignant tumors and cancers, especially mammary cancer, skin cancers, and lymphoma. Cancer is the #1 cause of death in Airedales (but that's true of many, perhaps even most, other breeds, as well).

The most common orthopedic diseases in Airedales are hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. The Orthopedic Foundation of America evaluated the hip X-rays of 4700 Airedales and found 12% dysplastic. In addition, 12% of 139 elbow X-rays were declared dysplastic. Both of these rates are considerably higher than they should be.

Other orthopedic health issues in Airedales include Wobbler's syndrome, cruciate ligament rupture, panosteitis, osteochondritis, and luxating patella.

The most common (serious)

eye disease in Airedales is cataracts (8% reported in the club survey). Other eye diseases reported were glaucoma, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), retinal dysplasia, entropion, eyelash abnormalities, and corneal dystrophy (a particularly severe form in Airedales).

Can you prevent health problems from happening to YOUR Airedale Terrier?

Yes, often you can.

  1. Some health problems are genetic, which means inherited from parents. Genetic health issues are common in Airedales today because of unwise breeding practices. My book, Dog Quest: Find The Dog Of Your Dreams. shows you how to find an Airedale Terrier puppy who is genetically healthy.
  2. Other health problems are environmental – caused by the way you raise your dog. My best-selling dog health book, 11 Things You Must Do Right To Keep Your Dog Healthy and Happy shows you how to prevent environmental health problems by raising your Airedale Terrier puppy (or adult dog) in all the right ways.
